Ruscus aculeatus are small evergreen grassy shrubs of the lily family, clumped in clusters. The plant height is generally 20 to 40 cm, with transverse, fleshy roots, stem green, with linear edges, branching. Leaves become small dry membranous scales, 2 to 4 mm long, ovate, leathery green "phyllodes" grow between the axils of the scales, about 1.5 cm long, with basal arcuate veins, apex sharp spiny, replacing the leaves both morphologically and functively. The shape of the "leafy branch" resembles that of watermelon seed, so the pseudoleaf tree is also called melon seed pine. Flowers white, small, born in the middle and lower part of the midvein of the leafy branches, 3 perianth pieces in two outer and inner rings, base with triangular bracteoles, small berries spherical, about 1 cm in diameter, red when ripe.
