OPCs have been found in many plants since they were isolated from peanut shells by French scientist Dr. Jack Mescaley in 1947. Product Function
The antioxidant power of pine bark extract comes from proanthocyanidins (proanthocyanidin oligomers) (OPCs), which are 20 times more potent than vitamin C and 50 times more potent than vitamin E. As well-known antioxidants, OPCs can effectively suppress free radicals, which play an important role in degenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, blurred vision, sunburn and premature aging.
1. Cardiovascular disease
Studies have confirmed that OPCs can help strengthen capillaries, arteries, and veins, giving them many important clinical applications. OPCs can be used to stabilize blood vessel walls, suppress inflammation, and primarily support tissues containing collagen and elastin.
a) Arteriosclerosis
The oxidant LDL has been shown to play an important role in causing atherosclerosis. Due to the excellent antioxidant function of OPCs, it can eliminate free radicals like collagenase and elastase damage to the arterial wall, thereby preventing or repairing arterial stiffness. Animal studies have shown that OPCs can slow or repair arterial stiffness.
b) Venous insufficiency (varicose veins)
Varicose veins occur when blood pools in the legs, causing pain, heaviness, edema, fatigue and floating veins. By strengthening capillary strength and reducing capillary permeability, OPCs can reduce the pain and edema of venous insufficiency. OPCs are recommended as an excellent treatment for hemorrhoids for the same reason. There are indications that OPCs are also effective in treating edema after injury and surgery. OPCs can accelerate the elimination of edema by repairing damaged blood and lymphatic vessels that have lost fluid.
A 92-person double-blind controlled drug trial showed that ingestion of 100mgOPCs three times daily significantly improved major symptoms including heaviness, edema, and foot discomfort. Over a period of one month, 75% of patients who received OPCs had sufficient improvement in symptoms. Another controlled drug test involving 364 individuals also showed significantly better results with OPCs than with placebo.
c) Retinopathy/improved vision
The ability of OPCs to strengthen capillaries and reduce permeability is highly effective in patients suffering from stroke and retinopathy. OPCs have been shown to improve retinopathy caused by diabetes, atherosclerosis, inflammation, and aging. OPCs have also been reported to speed up visual recovery after bright light and improve visual acuity in patients with visual fatigue caused by prolonged computer use.
A 6-week controlled (but non-blinded) study evaluated the ability of grape skin (seed) OPCs to improve night vision in normal subjects. In this trial, 100 healthy volunteers who received 200mgOPCs a day showed a significant increase in night vision and strong flash recovery compared with controls who did not receive the drug.
2. Aging/Alzheimer's Disease
Because OPCs can easily cross the blood-brain barrier and effectively inhibit free radical damage to brain tissue, it can effectively prevent and improve Alzheimer's disease.
3, skin
Because of their antioxidant capacity, OPCs are thought to protect the skin from excess UV radiation and free radicals. There is considerable evidence that OPCs protect and strengthen collagen and elastin in the skin, thereby preventing wrinkles and maintaining skin elasticity. Adding OPCs to creams is a popular way to delay skin ageing, in theory restoring the skin's youthful glow by repairing collagen and elastin.
4, anti-cancer, anti-inflammation and anti-allergy
Because free radicals play an important role in tumor formation, OPCs can be used in moderation to exert their anti-cancer effects. At the same time, OPCs have certain effects on various types of arthritis because they effectively inhibit inflammatory factors such as PG,5-HT and leukotrienes, and selectively bind to the articular connective elements to relieve pain and edema. The antiallergic activity of OPCs is thought to be a result of their antihistamine activity. Compared with other anti-allergy drugs, OPCs have the same effect without any side effects such as drowsiness.
